ST. LOUIS LITERARY AWARD CEREMONY PROGRAM
publication design, 2023

CLIENT: Saint Louis University Library Associates, organization that provides literary programming in St. Louis, Missouri

AUDIENCE: Fans of Neil Gaiman, St. Louis community members, and literature enjoyers

GOAL: Present the audience with all necessary information for the event in a logical and clear way.

PROCESS: For this project, I played a lead role within the student-run graphic design studio Tidy Projects. When creating this program, making sure all the text fit and was readable was one of the highest priorities. Much of the text also changed during the project as needs evolved so the design had to be flexible to accommodate more or less information. Messing with small details like using 3 columns instead of 4 to prevent names from breaking lines or putting the presenters’ title on their own line in a lighter, italicized style of the typeface to create a sense of hierarchy made up the bulk of this project’s work. For the cover, we drew on the series of posters we created for Saint Louis University Library Associates’ Campus Read programming featuring Neil Gaiman to give the audience a visual they may have already seen to connect with. These mysterious and dark visuals, which speak to themes of Gaiman’s work, were also continued within the program to create visual interest and maintain a sense of cohesiveness.
OUTCOME: We created a program that effectively communicated a large amount of information while still being visually appealing.
